Inside One of the Best Arcades in Japan - Game Center Mikado
Arcades may have died out in much of the world, but in Japan, arcades are still a huge part of gaming culture. One of my favourites is Game Center Mikado in Tokyo – it’s a great place to dive into legendary fighting games and retro classics in a relaxed atmosphere.
Mikado is a couple of stops from Shinjuku in Takadanobaba, a district that’s famous for being the place that Osamu Tezuka chose for his iconic character Astro Boy to be “born.” JR trains play the theme song when they stop at this station, and there are a couple of large murals of Tezuka’s work outside the station.
Game Center Mikado is just around the corner, on an unassuming alley that runs along the train line. This two storey arcade has been one of the central locations for Tokyo’s fighting game scene for more than a decade (it was opened in 2006 but has been in its current location since 2009), playing host to regular tournaments and known for high level play. It’s also – unlike the many Taito Game Stations and Club SEGAs around the country - privately owned.

Batman's Psyche Is Perfectly Mirrored in the Gotham of Arkham Knight
Stories do not happen in a vacuum. A story’s setting can be as much of a character as the actual characters inhabiting it, reflecting both them and the thematic elements of the plot. This is true of games, books, and movies—in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, for instance, a great and mighty evil renders the land of Mordor into, quite literally, a festering, pulsating, and decaying wasteland that is inhabited by orcs and other beings who personify the very evil that corrupts the once bucolic realm of Mordor.
There’s perhaps no better representation of this than Batman: Arkham Knight. The character, layout, and visual starkness of Gotham City act as a malleable mirror to Batman’s psyche within the Arkham-verse. The story sunk its bat-fangs into me but Gotham, the city itself, is what truly stands out as both the home and the harbinger of the dichotomy of good/evil that brings the city to grimy, pulsating life.

How Historically Accurate is Red Dead Redemption 2?
Watch its unimaginably long credit roll and you’ll spot a number of researchers whose roles were dedicated to making sure Red Dead Redemption 2 reflected a historical reality. Outside of the simulation genre, video games tends to play very fast and loose with history, but Rockstar Games has goes above and beyond in every effort to make the world seem deeply believable while functioning within the parameters of an open world entertainment experience. This dedication realism exercised by Rockstar is commendable, but the team also clearly understood that pure, unadulterated retellings of real-world events and frontier life also wouldn’t perfectly serve their creative purposes.

It’s the stuff of internet fantasy: NBA 2K gameplay director Mike Wang began his adult life as a terribly unsure college student worrying over what he would do for the rest of his career. Through a series of incredibly fortunate favors and meetings, Wang eventually found himself at the offices of NBA 2K developer Visual Concepts. What awaited him was a team of developers that amusingly recognized his username from the forums.

Marvel's Spider-Man (PS4) - Silver Lining DLC Review
Insomniac saved the best for last: Spider-Man: Silver Lining is what I wanted the first two chapters of The City That Never Sleeps DLC to be. Great character work across the board is not only fun in the moment but raises intriguing, farther-reaching implications for the story. And with diverse missions and a clear sense of resolution, this is just a much more satisfying day in the very dangerous life of Spider-Man.
Silver Lining’s story will only run you about an hour and a half at most, but its missions are some of the most varied of the three DLCs thus far, and all were a joy to play. Silver Sable’s return is a treat. I found her to be a bit forgettable in the main campaign, but with her dual desires to retrieve her gear from Hammerhead and work toward helping her home country, Insomniac has done a nice job of adding depth to her. Voice actor Nichole Elise’s strong performance proves less is more, as Sable can often say as much with an outreached hand as Spider-Man can in several puns – which she, amusingly, has very little patience for. The interplay between the two is a highlight of not just Silver Lining but of the entire City That Never Sleeps DLC trilogy.

Next Generation Xbox Is Reportedly Codenamed Anaconda
The next generation family of Xbox consoles reportedly have two codenames: Anaconda and Lockhart.
As reported by Windows Central, the two separate Xbox SKUs will theoretically act like the current Xbox One S and Xbox One X do now: Lockhart is rumored to be a more affordable, baseline model that makes the technology accessible to a larger group of consumers while Anaconda is a beefed up version that will cost more for fans willing to shell out the money for more power. Both are expected to be released by holiday 2020.
While the report suggests Lockhart could be comparable to (or a bit more powerful than) the current power of the Xbox One X, Anaconda would be much more powerful, providing a “cutting-edge console gaming experience.” Rumors also indicate that Microsoft is “exploring technology to dramatically reduce loading times,” possibly including a faster SSD hard drive. The Anaconda could also potentially act as a dev kit.

Two New Shadowverse Cards - Revealed!
The next Shadowverse expansion – Altersphere – will be upon us soon, and it’s one of my favourite themes yet. The set-up – as you can see in the trailer below – is that a being from another dimension is invading the world and twisting familiar characters into unfamiliar forms.
It’s a neat idea, and Cygames is clearly having fun bringing back fan favourite legendary characters in entirely new forms - and with different class alignments. Take Demonlord Eachtar, the incredibly strong Shadowcraft legendary from Tempest of the Gods. He’s returned as Holylord Eachtar, a Havencraft legendary minion. He still has the same play point cost and stat line, and still gives allied followers +2/+0 and Rush. He even still uses shadows (i.e. allied followers that have died) but instead of summoning zombies, summons Holy Cavaliers.

Fallout 76's New Ultrawide Mode Comes Under Fire From Players

This week's Fallout 76 patch saw a number of changes roll out for the game, including adding ultrawide screen resolution support. However, players on Reddit have discovered that the new ultrawide mode appears to be nothing more than a modification to the INI file, meaning that 16:9 aspect ratio has been stretched to meet the wider resolution, rather than being a true 21:9 display.
The result is that, while the game appears to render correctly in 21:9, the UI doesn't adjust accordingly, stretching unnaturally.

Red Dead Online Review in Progress - Week 2
It’s been a little over a week since we published our initial impressions of the Red Dead Online beta and, while there haven’t been any grand new additions in terms of fresh missions or activities yet, I have had a different experience over the last week compared to my first.
During my first few days with the beta the service remained extremely reliable (I encountered no technical issues or drop-outs) and the largely-respectful culture of the Free Roam lobbies was a genuine surprise to me. Griefing was actually bafflingly rare.
In contrast, over the last week I encountered a long string of connection faults for the first time (error 0x20010006, isolated to one bad day, but I had more than a dozen drop-outs over the course of it) and Free Roam lobbies seem to be displaying a lot more of the boorish behaviour I’d anticipated from the outset. I’ve been shot in the back while fishing, I’ve been shoved off piers while fishing, and I’ve been tackled, beaten, and hogtied (while fishing).

Spider-Verse Explained
Sometimes it seems like Spider-Man is the loneliest and unluckiest hero in the entire Marvel Universe. But as it turns out, he's far from the only wall-crawling hero out there. The Marvel multiverse is full of like-minded do-gooders who use their spider-powers to defend innocent lives. And when those heroes come together, the Spider-Verse is born.
And now, with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse hitting theaters, what better time to delve into the history of the Spider-Verse? The film stars the voice talents of Shameik Moore (as Spider-Man/Miles Morales), Jake Johnson (as Peter Parker), Hailee Steinfeld (as Gwen Stacy), Mahershala Ali (as Miles' uncle Aaron), Brian Tyree Henry (as Miles’ father Jefferson), Luna Lauren Velez (as Miles’ mother Rio), Lily Tomlin (as Aunt May), and Liev Schreiber (as The Kingpin).

Dragon Age 4: Who is the Dread Wolf?
Thursday night’s Game Awards offered much in the way of glitz, glam, and game teasers -- including an exclusive look at the fourth installment of BioWare’s blockbuster Dragon Age series. BioWare has been known to offer painstaking amounts of detail in their promo art which, if deciphered correctly, has the potential to unlock oodles of secrets about Thedas, character backstory, lore and more. Remember Inquisition’s character tarot cards?
Sure, maybe we didn’t get anything quite as lush as extensive character art, but Dragon Age fans are hungry. So we’ll take a 60 second trailer.
Even if those 60-seconds are sparse in some ways, they are rich in others. Sure, four seconds are devoted to BioWare’s logo, ten of them are a hashtag, and thirty seconds are spent in a slow pan over an ancient cursed idol... But those remaining sixteen seconds? Hoo boy. We’re graced with a real doozy of a promo image, coupled with a voiceover from a Dragon Age I major character. Does any of this give a clue into Dragon Age 4? Who is the Dread Wolf and why are they rising? What does it all mean?

South Korea Makes Boosting Other Players' Game Levels Illegal
South Korea’s National Assembly recently passed an amendment that can result in players caught boosting in online games getting charged with a two-year suspended prison sentence and a fine of up to $18,000.
As reported by Inven (via Dot Esports), the law is an amendment to South Korea's Game Industry Promotion Act, which already applied these punishments to crimes related to hacking, the illegal distribution and licensing of games, and more. Boosting occurs when a highly-skilled player in games like Overwatch or League of Legends is paid to artificially boost another player’s ranking by logging onto their account and winning matches for them.

Destiny 2: Black Armory Review
With the Black Armory, Bungie has opted to dramatically shift its content delivery strategy for Destiny 2, and results are mixed. On the one hand, if you’ve hit the maximum level you’ll have new weapons to chase and a few of the new Forges to explore, which is good enough to keep me busy for a while. However if you’re not at that 600 power level yet and have been excitedly looking forward to new PVP maps, Strikes, or Story missions to help you reach it in an entertaining way, then you’ll probably be disappointed as that’s all completely absent.
We open with a mission that’s unintentionally hilarious. You’re told you’re not welcome to the new area, but then your silent guardian flashes a badge you simply picked up from Spider while sporting a confused look on their face. Ada reacts as though you’ve given the secret Stonecutters’ handshake, rescinding her hostility and ceremoniously welcoming you to this new coveted space with no questions asked. This interesting character is then reduced to a stationary plot-delivery device and bounty vendor from that point forward, and it’s incredibly disappointing.

Earth Defense Force 5 Review
In real life, I don’t like creepy crawly things. I’m terrified of spiders, appalled by roaches, scared stupid of wasps, and refuse to touch any animal that might be deemed “slimy.” My wife kills all the bugs in our house. That fear adds a little gravity and catharsis to fighting the thousands of house-sized monstrosities in EDF 5 – and “thousands” is no hyperbole. During my playthrough of Earth Defense Force 5, I have thus far killed precisely 21,369 space aliens, murderous robots, and giant insects. I know this because the record-keeping department of the Earth Defense Force tells me so, and yet somehow even that astronomical number seems far too low for the amount of satisfaction I’ve derived from it – even before jumping into the excellent co-op multiplayer.

Yes, Far Cry’s latest entry is set in a post-apocalyptic world, but crucially, it’s one that’s trying to resist all the cliches that setting might suggest.
A lot of what you might expect from the apocalypse has already passed. The US has endured a long and brutal nuclear winter, where nothing grew and almost everything died. Nearly two decades later, nature has enthusiastically reclaimed what humankind lost – New Dawn presents the most lush and inviting apocalypse imaginable.
