Video games are still a relatively new form of entertainment. But while games don't have the long history of other mediums, there are a number of them that are getting up there and deserve to be remembered for helping to guide the future of the art form.

With a big side of nostalgia we're remembering those games that celebrate major milestones this year: 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and yes, even 40 years old now. While we can't include them all, here are just some the biggest anniversary milestones in video gaming we can celebrate in 2019!

Exploring Rage 2’s Wasteland of Opportunity

Up until now exposures to Rage 2 have been fairly linear affairs; the barren open world expanse of Avalanche Studios and id’s post-apocalyptic shooter sequel has remained strictly off limits in favour of highlighting the game’s overhauled and overcharged combat system. For my latest hands-on with the game I wasn’t quite given the keys to the kingdom, but I was handed the keys to a rusted out bucket of bolts generously referred to as a ‘car’ and allowed to tour a small section of Rage 2’s map.

My first stop was a return to the city of Wellspring. The ramshackle sprawl of neon and rust from the original game was begging to be reexamined, but since my time with the game was limited I decided to hustle past the bulletin boards covered in job contracts, and various other NPC quest-givers, and instead trigger the main story mission. Wellspring mayor, Loosum Hagar, was locked in a power struggle with an entitled twerp named Klegg Clayton (the wealthy offspring of Mayor Clayton from the original), and I was charged with sneaking into Clayton’s high-rise office in order to plant a bug on his computer. In order to gain access to his domain, I had to first build up my celebrity status by becoming a reality TV star in a manner so ruthless it would make a Kardashian wince.

Wargroove Review

Someone at Chucklefish clearly got tired of waiting for Nintendo to bring back Advance Wars, because Wargroove’s turn-based tactics combat is as close to a modern, fantasy-themed revival as you’ll find. But this isn’t a game that relies only on its gorgeous pixel-art nostalgia to win your love: Wargroove is a challenging and extremely fun tactics game, with great multiplayer options and a level editor strong enough to make an entire tactics game of your own.

Instead of controlling a party of bespoke heroes like in a Fire Emblem game, Wargroove gives you a unique commander and has you summon waves of disposable units mid-battle. Obviously you’ll still want to play smart and keep your troops alive, but removing that fear of losing someone with a name and a face to perma-death or having to worry about getting your favorite characters kills to level them up makes for a lighter and snappier tactical flavor.

Red Dead Online: Free Gold and Gun Rush Fixes in Latest Update

Rockstar announced today an update for Red Dead Online aimed at addressing some matchmaking issues in the recently-added Gun Rush mode, as well as promising more free Gold Bars to players along with other upcoming changes to the multiplayer component of Red Dead Redemption 2.

Gun Rush, a more traditional Battle-Royale-style game mode than the "Make it Count" mode that first launched in RDOnline's Showdown Series', is supposed to host up to 32 players per match - but many players have been game lobbies with half of that or less. "We identified a few matchmaking issues that we are continually working to address," reads the post on Rockstar's Newswire. "We’ve since added some minor improvements that should help generate fuller lobbies and we will add more fixes in upcoming title updates. Gun Rush is best experienced with as many competitors as possible, so if you had any issues with smaller lobbies last week, we strongly encourage you to give it another go this weekend as we are already regularly seeing much fuller matches on both PS4 and Xbox One."

Last month, four copies of Kingdom Hearts 3 were sold ahead of the game's release, and despite the damage control and efforts from the community to shut down any leaks before they became widespread, the experience has given Tetsuya Nomura second thoughts about how to handle the launch of his games going forward.

"Because of what happened, the risks for a simultaneous worldwide release are high, for any games that I work on henceforth, currently I cannot help but reconsider a simultaneous worldwide release for at the very least the retail package version," he said in an interview with Famitsu, via Kotaku.

Kingdom Hearts 3 Review

Some of my fondest childhood gaming memories are of being wowed by the first Kingdom Hearts and its recreation of Disney worlds I knew from my favorite animated movies and shows. But even viewed through the rose-tinted glasses of 17 years worth of nostalgia, those memories pale in comparison to Kingdom Hearts 3’s colorful, varied combat and huge, lovingly detailed levels. Square Enix’s long-awaited conclusion to its beloved action-RPG trilogy is so satisfying in its gameplay evolutions that it makes me feel like a kid again, even if its story resolutions don’t think far outside the toy box.

This new set of movie-quality Disney worlds are almost all delights to explore. The sheer amount of treasures to collect and hidden Mickey emblems to discover really highlights the scale and detail of each world. They also introduce some fun gameplay options, including the chance to control toy mechs and even pilot your own ship on the high seas.

The Hong Kong Massacre Review

The Hong Kong Massacre is Hotline Miami meets Max Payne on the set of a John Woo movie, and for the most part it’s every bit as violent and thrilling as that combination sounds. While the minimalist story presentation and some repeated environments and boss fights expose its slightly limited scope, The Hong Kong Massacre consistently delivers a brutal ballet of ballistics that remains gripping from the first shot fired to the last enemy downed.

There’s some semblance of hard-boiled plot backboning the experience – you play an ex-cop out for revenge after his partner was killed by triad gangsters – but it mostly serves as a vehicle for your violent shootouts. It’s told through a series of disjointed cinematics and bar room conversations, with each of the 35 levels serving as a flashback to prior events. The storytelling may be sub-standard, but the shooting is so electrifying and addictive that the only plot you really need concern yourself with is the plot you’ll bury each of your enemies in at the dead triad cemetery.

Who Are Geras and Kronika in Mortal Kombat 11?

The first seven characters of Mortal Kombat 11 have been officially confirmed, plus a few others that we can pretty safely reserve a space on the character select screen for. And while the current roster is mostly made up of familiar faces, there are two mysterious characters that are brand new to the series. One, Geras, is a confirmed playable character, but the other, named Kronika, has only been seen in cinematic trailers. To learn more about these two newcomers, we went straight to the source, the godfather of Kombat, Ed Boon.

“Kronika is the boss of bosses. All the Mortal Kombat events that have happened, since MK1, she’s the one kind of architecting everything that’s happened,” said Boon. “Everything that’s happened has occurred according to her plan, with the goal of having Shinnok be the final victor.”

Imagine sitting down in a concept car that has all kinds of awesome extras and amenities - things you’ve wished cars had for ages! That’s what At the Gates is to the 4X genre. Conceptually, there are so many reasons to be excited about it, but once you start playing it falls apart pretty fast.

Coming from Jon Shafer, the lead designer of Civilization 5, Sid Meier’s storied series is the closest point of comparison for this hand-drawn, turn-based trek through the early 400s CE. But where recent Civ entries have stuck a bit too close to familiar design space, At the Gates holds no cow sacred – and that’s the best thing about it.

Far Cry: New Dawn Gets RPG Update, Goes Beyond Hope County

Recently, though, we got to sit down and roam around on our own for a few hours, and it’s clear that while this is still very much a Far Cry game, it’s trying to live up to its resurgent title.

All of the staples from Far Cry 5 are still here - taking down outposts, a co-op friendly campaign, recruiting allies (one of whom is an adorable dog, Timber, that can ride in your motorcycle’s sidecar, making this a strong contender for my GotY already), but Ubisoft is also trying to keep its apparent 2018 resolution to change up their formulas - or at least mix and match them in new ways.

The new league will be held in the new Farming Simulator 19 and will feature 10 tournaments across Europe. The events have progressed from bale stacking we saw in last year's Farming Simulator Championship to a competitive 3 vs 3 mode.

The 250.000€ prize pool will be made up of "big prizes" for each of the 10 tournaments, and 100.000€ in prizes at the finals.

"Competitive farming is something people enjoy for years now, but it hasn’t been done in eSports so far," said Christian Ammann, Giants Software CEO and eSports division manager, via Gamasutra.

New Far Cry New Dawn Gameplay Details

A few new gameplay details for Far Cry New Dawn have been revealed by Ubisoft through a brief Q&A video on Twitter.

When responding to the question “What game mechanics changed over Far Cry 5?” creative director Jean-Sebastien Decant touched on three subjects: weapon crafting, the home base and the outpost escalation system.

Anthem: Everything We Learned After 20 Hours of Gameplay

Anthem is just around the corner and all month long we’ve been covering it as part of IGN First. For our big deep dive this month, we got the opportunity to go to BioWare and play over 20 hours of Anthem in a work-in-progress state.

With that knowledge we’ve returned to share what we learned in order to give you a better understanding of what Anthem is going to be like, and how to decipher some of its lesser-known aspects – especially if you intend on spending any time in the upcoming demo. While some of this you may already know if you’ve been following Anthem, some of it you likely don’t, so let’s get into it.

Trials Rising Is as Fun as Ever...if You Have a Proper Analog Trigger

Let’s get the not-so-great part out of the way first: Trials Rising, the latest in the delightfully sadistic, physics-fueled motorcycle obstacle course racer, is coming to Nintendo Switch for the first time. That in and of itself is actually good; Trials on the go, yay! (Side note: the mobile version of the series, Trials Frontier, is surprisingly adept from a gameplay perspective.) But playing it with the JoyCon in multiple configurations – first with the JoyCon Grip and then using each JoyCon as its own controller in two-player mode – is far from the ideal Trials experience. Trials is at its best when you can feather a trigger to precisely moderate your gas pedal; the Switch just can’t provide that nearly as effectively as the DualShock 4 or Xbox One controllers can.

Resident Evil 2 Review

I have fond memories of playing the original Resident Evil 2 in my dorm room at the University of Kansas back in 1998 and thinking the CGI cutscenes looked incredibly realistic. (Oh, 1998 Daemon, you had so much to learn!) Another great gaming recollection of mine is playing the 2002 remake of the first Resident Evil on GameCube with its beautifully updated visuals, completely new areas to explore, and terrifying new enemies. Now, in 2019, Capcom has given me a new experience I’ll remember for a long time: this ground-up remake of Resident Evil 2 is a very fun, very creepy adventure thanks to its completely new and modern graphics, controls, and some smart quality-of-life improvements. It does squander a golden opportunity to make good use of its two playable characters, but I enjoyed nearly every gory minute of my return to Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield’s shoes.

How Resident Evil 2 Achieves Horror Through Reduction

On January 25, a remake of Capcom’s iconic Resident Evil 2 is set to launch on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Originally published in 1998, Resident Evil 2 capitalized on the success of the series’ first title and launched to unanimously positive critical reception. This can largely be attributed to the fact that it achieved a unique kind of horror by adhering to principles of reduction: less is more. In a sense, it's particularly fitting that Resi 2 is being remade now because the most recent iteration of the series -- Resident Evil 7 -- achieved success by drawing from what made Resi 2 so good.

These principles can be seen right from the get-go. Resident Evil 2 forces fixed camera angles on the player, withholding information from them and insisting they be courageous enough to transition through the environment with a degree of blindness. Every time you trigger a change in perspective, you forfeit the advantage you gained from the previous one. You could stare at the screen for twenty minutes, but once you turn that corner you’re dropped into uncharted territory. This is always a gamble. Sometimes, you’ll be rewarded with a room full of ammunition; other times, you'll walk right into the not-so-loving-embrace of the walking dead. Could there be a Licker ready to crash through a two-way mirror? Or Mr. X distilling unease as he bursts through a brick wall after you? These awkward angles are not so much the best Capcom could do at a time of technical restriction as they are a product of meticulous horror design.

Here's How the Anthem Demo Differs From the Main Game

Mark Darrah, executive producer of BioWare’s upcoming Anthem, has given some details on how Anthem’s beta that kicks off later this week will differ from the final game.

In a series of responses on Twitter (via Kotaku), Darrah explained many of these differences. The demo will not place players at the beginning of the game, but at some point in the middle instead. There won’t be tutorials (or at least not like there will be in the main game) or the “pilot picker” - the game’s character creator. The game’s economy and overall balance will reportedly be much different in the final game as well.

Every IGN Resident Evil Review

Twenty-two years ago the world first met Jill Valentine, AKA the Master of Unlocking, when Resident Evil made its debut and changed the face of survival horror gaming. Now, finally, in 2019 we're getting the long-awaited sequel, Resident Evil 2, this week! I wonder what took them so... wait, I'm being told there've actually been nine games and a ton of spinoffs, and IGN has reviewed pretty much all of them. (It's a good thing we were founded mere months after the first game came out!)

Here, for the historical record, are all of IGN's Resident Evil reviews, which range from 2016's predictably terrible Umbrella Corps to the series high of the still-revered Resident Evil 4. Now that you know what we thought of them at the time they came out, give us your opinion: Which ones stick out in your mind as the most terrifyingly great and the most terrifyingly worst?

Earlier this week, a mysterious ice sphere appeared above Polar Peak. A silhouette of the Ice King, the final reward of Season 7's Battle Pass, was visible inside. Television sets across the map began broadcasting a forecast warning with a countdown to today's event.

The event started with ice sphere exploding, fully revealing the Ice King and clearing out any storm effects in the sky. A giant icy figure appeared over the ocean and sent forth a frosty wind across the map. Once the fog settled, the entire map was covered in snow.

The Punisher Villain Jigsaw Explained

Netflix's The Punisher: Season 1 wrapped up with the badly disfigured Billy Russo -- ex-friend of Frank Castle -- clinging to life in a hospital bed and silently vowing revenge against Castle, locking him in as the villain Jigsaw in Season 2.

And now with Season 2 of the Netflix show debuting, here's everything you need to know about Jigsaw and why he's managed to stay the one recurring thorn in the Punisher's side all these years.

Jigsaw Explained: The Basics

Given that the Punisher's entire modus operandi is killing criminals in brutal and spectacular fashion, it makes sense that his rogues gallery is pretty small compared to the likes of Spider-Man or Iron Man. Yet somehow, Billy Russo has managed to survive one encounter after another with Frank Castle, repeatedly cheating death and returning to exact vengeance on his most hated enemy once again.

7 Important Changes Coming to The Division 2

I played a lot of The Division when it came out. Going by its record-breaking sales numbers, you probably did too.I got close to level cap, spent a bunch of time in the Dark Zone – getting screwed over, and occasionally, screwing over others – and had a brilliant time. Then I stopped and never went back.

The Division was a huge success for Ubisoft – it broke a company sales record – but that drop-off is something the sequel wants to address. Its developer, Massive Entertainment, wants more people to be playing The Division 2 for longer, and to achieve that the team is Sweden is making a host of changes – some big, some subtle – to the sequel.

Every Star Wars Game EA Has Released...and Canceled

Electronic Arts has had a somewhat tumultuous relationship with Star Wars since it acquired the franchise's exclusive game license in 2013. At the time, EA announced three of its top studios — DICE, Visceral Games, and BioWare — would be developing games set in a galaxy far, far away. Nearly six years, a studio closure, and a handful of canceled projects later, DICE is the only EA studio to have put out a AAA Star Wars game, leading many fans to question the publisher's plans for the franchise.

Now, following yesterday's reported cancellation of EA Vancouver's open-world game, we've decided to look back and compile a complete list of EA's Star Wars projects, including games that've been released, games that've been canceled, and those that are still in development.

Will Metro Exodus Finally Take Metro Mainstream?

When IGN last checked in with Artyom’s latest post-apocalyptic adventure Metro Exodus at E3, we were less than impressed with the technical issues that plagued our time with it and, a month before release, there are still a few signs that things aren’t totally okay. A few crashes, a few hard locks and a moment where it tried to load a save file from a totally different sequence can be put down to the fact the game was running on developmental kits, but some other bits and pieces indicated that perhaps this isn’t going to be the big breakout title for the Metro series.

There’s some really aggressive motion blur on the console version (which in this build, couldn’t be turned off) which makes turning a bit headache inducing. Guns feel heavy, movement feels awkward and bullets feel ineffective, but all of that is entirely by design. Survival in the Metro world isn’t supposed to be a walk in the park. Even with thumbstick sensitivity ramped all the way up to the top of the sliders, it still feels like Artyom is covered in a nuclear treacle. When being pursued by some ghouls through a warehouse, climbing scaffold in an attempt to get to the safety of the rooftops, I fell off a couple of times because I couldn’t turn fast enough or with enough precision. And, although a stealthy approach is recommended, I found it way too easy to rush down a pack of bandits and use the melee kill attack right in front of them, because the AI just didn’t cope with the rush-in strategy!

Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes Review

I felt a rush of excitement every time I booted up a new game in the Death Drive Mk II. The fictitious game console essentially acts as the level select in Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes, and I was always curious to see what developer Grasshopper Manufacture had cooked up next. But after watching each of its seven games’ charmingly nonsensical opening cutscenes, the ensuing action rarely surprised and too frequently turned tedious. There are moments where renowned designer Suda51’s brilliant touch is on display, but this cobbled together collection of disjointed parts never quite hits its stride.

In typical Suda51 fashion, Travis Strikes Again has an off the wall story. Taking place years after the events of the first game, Travis has moved to a camper in the woods to spend his days playing the Death Drive Mk II, an elusive and dangerous system with a dark backstory. Travis’ retirement gets interrupted by the father of Bad Girl, one of the assassins Travis killed in the original, before both are absorbed into the Death Drive itself.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey DLC – Legacy of the First Blade: Shadow Heritage Review

The second episode of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey’s Legacy of the First Blade DLC, Shadow Heritage faithfully follows the formula Ubisoft laid out in Episode 1: Hunted. Fortunately, that formula works just as well this time around, drip-feeding us small doses of faction backstory, while focusing on the drama of its characters. With another branch of cultists to track down and murder, a couple of new tricks of the trade to put to use, and some well-delivered moments between characters, Shadow Heritage is yet another good 3-5 hour serving of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.

Shadow Heritage picks up shortly after the events of Hunted, and you’re once again working with the mysterious character from Assassin’s Brotherhood lore. This time around there’s less historical backstory to enjoy, with the focus shifting toward the current machinations of the Order of the Ancients in their pursuit of Alexios or Kassandra. Like Hunted, this episode doesn’t add much to Odyssey’s now-defined gameplay recipe: help the people of Greece in exchange for clues, track down targets, and kill cultists. But it still works.

The Early Days of Blizzard With Co-Founder Allen Adham

It’s been an interesting time for Blizzard of late. 2018 was particularly turbulent, with a lot of changes within the company, from the departure of long-running president and co-founder Mike Morhaime, through to shake-ups on other teams, such as major turnover on Hearthstone’s Team 5. Even BlizzCon, usually a celebration of all things Blizzard, turned toxic after the ill-advised BlizzCon reveal of Diablo Immortal. And then, to close out the year, there was the announcement that development on Heroes of the Storm would be scaled back and its esports program axed.

Of course, the year held plenty of highlights for the company too. There was the inaugural season of the Overwatch League, which drew a wide range of viewers and fan support from across the globe, while World of Warcraft received a brand-new expansion in the form of Battle for Azeroth, among many other updates to the studio’s stable of titles.
