In the opening sequence of Marvel’s Spider-Man for PlayStation 4, Insomniac Games had to come up with some creative solutions to make Fiske Tower bigger on the inside than it was on the outside.
Revealed during Insomniac’s GDC 2019 tech postmortem and subsequently posted on Twitter, Insomniac senior engine programmer Elan Ruskin shared a video showing how the developer managed to fit a larger interior inside of a smaller exterior while keeping all of Manhattan intact.
As it turns out, they didn’t.
Also from our #GDC19 tech postmortem: the transition into Fisk Tower in #SpiderManPS4's intro mission. The interior space is much larger than the exterior envelope, and too big to hold in memory at the same time as Manhattan. So we use some careful camerawork to hide the swap! pic.twitter.com/Ur53ZSVGr8
