Red Dead Online Review in Progress

The Red Dead Online experience is one that stretches from moments of patient player management that are barely distinguishable from Red Dead Redemption 2’s single-player component, to the complete chaos of PvP multiplayer in indiscriminate, close-quarters slaughter. It’s proven reliable and robust for me over the past two days, even with its beta caveat, and despite a few concerns I’ve had a lot of fun of fun returning to the Wild West and carving out a fresh identity for my new avatar.

In my first two days embedded in Rockstar’s sprawling shared world I’ve hunted game, harassed griefers, hijacked a train, and had no less than three haircuts. I’ve partnered with friends to take on traditional missions bookended with well-produced cutscenes, and stalked total strangers through a shrinking section of forest with just a handful of throwing knives in small-scale battles royale. I’ve warily quaffed beers with an unknown player in a Blackwater bar and been lassoed and towed behind another player’s horse for no apparent purpose.

US Army Plans to Use Microsoft's HoloLens for Combat Missions, Training

Microsoft has won a "$480 million contract to supply prototypes for augmented reality systems to the Army for use on combat missions and in training."

As reported by Bloomberg, this contract could lead to the US Army purchasing over 100,000 HoloLens headsets, intending to "increase lethality by enhancing the ability to detect, decide and engage before the enemy."

While the U.S. Army and Israeli military have been running training programs with Microsoft HoloLens, these next steps would prepare them in use for live combat.

While the Army will be using HoloLens devices, they will obviously be different than the consumer-grade products as they will look to "incorporate night vision and thermal sensing, measure vital signs like breathing and “readiness,” monitor for concussions and offer hearing protection."

"Dragon Age is an incredibly important franchise in our studio, and we’re excited to continue its legacy.  Look for more on this in the coming month (though I won’t tell you where to look…)."

While "Dragon Age stuff" doesn't necessarily mean BioWare is gearing up to announce the next entry in the role-playing franchise, the timing of this news is interesting. It’s possible this announcement could come during The Game Awards, which airs on December 6.

Underworld Ascendant Review

I had finally done it. After several hours of navigating bugs and glitches, surviving enemies whose AI seemed to ping-pong between omniscient and ludicrously stupid, and maze-like level design, I had reached the end of an area of Underworld Ascendant that had given me considerable trouble. I actually paused, allowed myself to feel that relief and euphoria one gets when they never have to look at something terrible again. The portal to the exit was before me. I stepped forward.

...And fell through the floor, as the geometry of the Stygian Abyss decided arbitrarily to render itself ethereal. The Ascendant, Underworld’s protagonist, plummeted into some sort of netherscape that forced a reset to escape, and, thanks to Underworld Ascendant’s ludicrous save system, all progress in the level in question was lost. An entire night spent meticulously poking around, exploring, fighting, and sneaking was rendered moot by something beyond my control.

5 Predictions for the 2018 Game Awards

The Game Awards airs live on Thursday, December 6 (watch it live on IGN starting at 6pm PT/9pm ET). Over the years, host and executive producer Geoff Keighley has built the event into not only a celebration of the gaming year coming to a close but a look ahead at the one to come. With that, we’ve got a few predictions on what announcements may be in store for us at the last major gaming event of 2018.

Yeah, Reggie just downplayed anything happening anytime soon with Nintendo’s third pillar. But the fact of the matter is that they’ve probably got something to show by now, even if it’s just a CG trailer. And Keighley has a knack of getting major exclusives out of Nintendo. Look no further than 2014, when he scored a video of Miyamoto running around Hyrule from a Nintendo conference room. As someone who does this for a living, I can assure you, getting that is no easy task. Or take last year, when Zelda’s Master Cycle was revealed at The Game Awards. Point is, I think Reggie is playing coy, and Metroid is coming out to play – in some form – at this year’s event.

Fortnite Blamed for Video Game Addiction in Kids Who Need Digital Rehab

Epic Games' battle royale shooter is getting more flak for allegedly contributing to video game addiction in kids.

Fortnite has come under fire once again for having a detrimental effect on younger players. “This game is like heroin,” said British behavioural specialist, Lorrine Marer, whose work involves dealing with children suffering from video game addiction. “Once you are hooked, it’s hard to get unhooked."

Bloomberg reports on a number of parents and professionals recounting their experiences on Twitter that include a 17-year old playing for 12 hours a day and falling asleep in class, to over half of certain groups of kids getting counseled for video game addiction at a handful of camps in North Carolina playing the game to excess.

5 Things Fallout 5 Can Learn From Fallout 76

Fallout 76 is Bethesda Game Studios’ first foray into multiplayer for the popular series. Unfortunately, its launch has drawn tepid responses, to put it mildly.

But what it has undoubtedly succeeded in doing is generating even more anticipation for a new single-player Fallout game, and while 76 may not have stuck its landing, it does have a few ideas worth carrying forward—and some lessons that should definitely be taken to heart.

Here are five things Fallout 5 can learn from Fallout 76.

It’s Past Time to Recreate Creation

While Fallout 76 looks spectacular in some places—especially when the lighting and atmosphere really click—the Creation Engine’s technical limitations were conspicuous in Fallout 4 back in 2015. In 2018, they’re inexcusable. Fallout 76’s performance is hindered by frequent stutters, game crashes, and launch consoles struggling to maintain a reasonable framerate—not to mention the lack of a field-of-view slider. It’s a shame the Creation Engine is known for these issues, and not as an efficient design platform both Bethesda and modders expertly use to build bigger, better worlds. The next Fallout game is unlikely to use a new engine, but we can at least hope Bethesda is willing to go to whatever lengths are necessary to bring Creation up to par.

9 Things Artifact Doesn't Tell You

Signature Cards

An Artifact decks must have a minimum of 40 cards, but 15 of those cards are determined by the five heroes you pick. Every hero automatically adds three copies of its unique signature card to your deck, which can’t be added any other way. That means if you see Zeus in an enemy line-up, you know Thunder God’s Wrath is in their deck – it also means that if he isn’t, you don’t have to worry about that particular card at all.

PlayStation Classic Review

One of the earliest marketing slogans for Sony’s first video game console was “Don’t underestimate the power of PlayStation.” It’s now 24 years later and it’s the power of nostalgia that can’t be undervalued, particularly when you first turn on the PlayStation Classic and are instantly teleported back more than two decades by the iconic Sony Computer Entertainment splash screen and sweeping synth sound. Unfortunately, this nostalgic jolt doesn’t last past scrolling through the short menu of just 20 included games, as this adorable miniature version of the most popular gaming console of the ‘90s lacks too many big names to truly live up to the ‘Classic’ label.

That’s not to say there aren’t some heavy hitters in the 20 games included on the PlayStation Classic roster, and certainly such a short list could never be absolutely definitive when culled down from the thousands of games that were released over the system’s six-year lifespan. But a lineup of ‘classic’ PlayStation games without a Gran Turismo, Tomb Raider, Wipeout, or Crash Bandicoot, to name a few of the most glaring omissions, makes for a compilation that feels decidedly incomplete and not really reflective of the system at its best, particularly at its relatively high price point ($99.99USD/£89.99GBP/$149.95AUD). It’s basically the gaming equivalent of getting front row seats at a Guns ‘n’ Roses concert and having the band not play anything off Appetite for Destruction.

Darksiders III Review

We haven’t seen many games like Darksiders III in the past decade or so. It’s a third-person action game that isn’t afraid to grind your progress to a halt for an hour or more until you figure out how to beat a seemingly-impossible boss. It doesn’t seem to aspire to match the visual polish of this year’s biggest blockbusters, and its design philosophy completely disregards all the hand-holding and coddling that has become the norm outside of Dark Souls and its brethren. But the combat is satisfying – and, you know, maybe not every game needs to be a giant open world with a million things to collect and a never-ending supply of side quests. Darksiders III fits comfortably in that spot.

Same Same But Different: Red Dead Redemption 2 vs The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

What’s wonderful about video games is that different games – and teams – can tackle the same concepts and ideas in fundamentally different ways. Take The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Red Dead Redemption 2. Two wildly different games in most respects, but in some ways they’ve incorporated very similar ideas into their respective open worlds. Both games offer incredibly rich destinations, dense with systems and content, but little direct explanation. These are games that want players to discover how they work and the things that are possible on their own. Importantly, however, beyond their core ambitions, both games also put an emphasis on a number of other, more specific things – the importance of horses as transport and companions, changing clothes according to climate, hunting and gathering as core gameplay elements, dynamic weather and day/night cycles, and so on.

14 Best Modern Metroidvanias

‘Metroidvania’ has become a buzzword in recent years, most often appearing as a bullet point in indie game descriptions. As the name suggests, it describes a game whose design borrows ideas from the likes of Castlevania and Metroid; its challenging, exploration-based, and progression throughout is based on acquiring items or upgrades to access new areas.

Because many of the best examples of Metroidvanias pair it with elements of other games – most often roguelikes and RPGs – it’s sometimes difficult to define exactly what a Metroidvania is. For this list, we’re sticking to the basics while casting a somewhat wide net.

Listed below are some of the very best modern Metroidvania games currently available.

No Man's Sky Visions Update Adds More Colorful Worlds, New Lifeforms

No Man's Sky's next update, called Visions, will be released tomorrow, November 22, Hello Games announced today.

The free update introduces a variety of new content to the ever-evolving No Man's Sky universe, including all-new worlds and lifeforms. New worlds contain new secrets, such as ancient bones that can be unearthed and strange artifacts that can be "displayed as trophies in your planetary base." Meanwhile, new "predatory fauna" and "deadly flora" add an extra layer of danger to exploration.

With the introduction of new worlds, Hello Games is also promising greater variety among planets. A broader color palette allows for "new shades of sky, grass, and water," according to the developer, as well as the introduction of rainbows as a new weather effect.

Warframe Review - Switch Update

There aren’t many games that make me feel as cool as Warframe does when I’m bullet-jumping through the air at breakneck speeds. While this free-to-play co-op shooter has wildly outgrown its original “space ninja” reputation since it first came out in 2013 – adding open-world areas, deep story missions, and even a hoverboard with a Tony Hawk-style scoring system – it’s the way it makes everything you do feel fast, powerful, and just plain awesome that keeps me coming back to its almost-endless well of loot.

Warframe is a dense game – a tangled ball of yarn made up of almost six years of updates, additions, system reworks, and content drops. Its different bits and pieces overlap and twist together in a way that can make it overwhelming to even think about trying to untangle it all, but it also means that there’s an almost inconceivable amount of deep and often extremely entertaining content to discover once you do.

Smash Ultimate: Everything You Need to Know About Story Mode

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for Nintendo Switch features a single-player mode called World of Light, which is all about collecting “spirits” to power up your roster of characters. The mode amounts to a series of challenges that reward you with spirits so you can, in turn, collect more spirits that can be upgraded and help you conquer bigger and tougher challenges. It’s an admittedly addictive system filled to the brim with delightful fan service, and while I didn’t finish my playtime thinking this will be the mode I pour the most hours into, it was a fun way to test my skills as a Smash player.

How Challenges Work

Challenges are primarily how you collect spirits, so completing Challenges will be what you spend most of your time doing in World of Light. Difficulty can vary wildly, so to give yourself the best shot at success you’re encouraged to read the prep screen and go in with the proper spirits equipped. (See us take on five Challenges in the video below.)

How Eevee Evolved Into a Pokemon Sensation

Pikachu is the mascot for the Pokemon franchise, so there’s little wonder why the electric mouse is featured on one version of the upcoming Pokemon: Let’s Go games for Nintendo Switch. The other version features Eevee, a Pokemon that has never been used as a selling point for an entire game, but that’s no reason to think Eevee doesn’t belong on the cover. Eevee has been a fan-favorite since its inception and has gone on to become one of the most beloved Pokemon in the series.

Pokemon: Let’s Go is modeled after 1998’s Pokémon Yellow Version for GameBoy, where the player starts off with a Pikachu while the player’s rival gets an Eevee. That’s one reason Pokemon: Let’s Go game director Junichi Masuda said he chose Eevee for this starring role – there’s a precedent for these two going head-to-head early on in the franchise.
