Rockstar has revealed their plans for Red Dead Online, the multiplayer component of Red Dead Redemption 2. While included in the price of Red Dead 2, the online mode won’t launch until it enters a public beta in November 2018.
In an exclusive Q&A with the Rockstar team, we asked Imran Sarwar, Director of Design at Rockstar North, what the reasoning behind this was, and why they wouldn’t drop the multiplayer experience alongside the single-player portion of the game.
“There are a few reasons for this,” Sarwar says. “The first is that even though Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online share the same gameplay mechanics and geography, we see them essentially as separate products that will grow and evolve independently of each other.
